What do you call a gathering of Simulationists looking for the most innovative ways to create realism in their sims? If you ask one of the 50 participants in Houston from this past week, they would say “SIM Summit”.
Over the past three days, Avkin teamed up with Sam Houston State University at The Woodlands campus for the inaugural summit. Attendees participated in multiple sessions focused on building and further developing simulation programs using different modalities, including using standardized patients and wearable simulators in simulation. Â

During the Summit, Sam Houston State University’s Simulation experts, Brittany Tower, MSN, RN, Shelly Bellis, and Devon Berry, PhD, MBA, helped lead sessions with Avkin Experts, Amy Cowperthwait CEO, RN, MSN, CNS, CHSE-A, Megan Weldon, CHSE, and Bethany McGonigle.
“It’s really exciting!” Avkin CEO, Amy Cowperthwait exclaimed, “the concept or idea that there are so many people that are interested in the content that we are presenting and that they are really excited about learning and it’s not just a ‘Come and hear people that have doing this for lots of years talk.”
Brittany Tower, MSN, RN, The Assistant Director for Simulation and Skills Learning at Sam Houston State University’s school of Nursing added, “The biggest takeaway is we all have the same issues, we all have the same things we are trying to accomplish, expecially with the competency based education coming into the forefront of education now…”
This 3 day event was a special situation that was funded with the help of the GEER II – Nursing Innovation Grant Program (GEER-II NIGP). Moving forward, Avkin is looking to host more SIM Summits around the country, focusing on one day events.
