Our Story
2016
Avkin officially launched as a company at INACSL in 2016.
2006
Amy Cowperthwait started her journey in simulation when she was hired at the University of Delaware as the skills and simulation coordinator.
2013
First prototype of the Avtrach was developed with partnership from University of Delaware engineering students, theater students, and nursing students.What is a Wearable Simulator?
Technology that can be worn by a live person that protects them from invasive procedures. Inside each device, haptic technology is embedded that can cue the wearer to react to the care that is being provided.
Avkin is the leader in wearable simulators. Starting back in 2016, Avkin was founded by a nurse educator frustrated by what was currently on the market. When other companies would not implement the technology, she believed in the dream and decided to start her own company. All of our products are made in the USA by our manufacturing team.
How did Avkin start?
Avkin was started by a nurse simulationist at the University of Delaware who saw the need for a better way to educate her students. She went to the engineering department with an idea to develop a wearable tracheostomy prototype.
After other companies would not license the technology, we submitted a poster at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH). We won first prize for innovation and technology at the conference and decided we would start our own company.
Avkin has grown exponentially over the years, expanding product lines beyond wearable simulators and into standardized patient methodology and consulting.

What does Avkin mean?
Rooted in the Latin words akin and vera, we took the words and combined them. Akin, meaning of similar character, and vera meaning truth. So in our hearts, it means truly like the real thing. Our goal has always been to create the highest quality products and services that allow for education to be of similar character and truly what learners will experience at the bedside.
